December 1st marks World AIDS Day dedicated to mourning those who have died of the disease and encouraging continued support for efforts geared towards AIDS research. In order to normalize conversations surrounding this much stigmatized topic, we’ve compiled a list of spots where you can get ready access to HIV/STI tests.
What happens if you should get a positive result? When a person is diagnosed with HIV, they will require medical care from an infectious diseases doctor who will request some blood tests to see what is the viral load of the virus and the level of immunity. Global recommendations require individuals to start treatment immediately upon diagnosis.
Individuals can also benefit from psychological and nutritional counseling at Marsa’s center. Medication can be provided for free through the National AIDS Control Program/Ministry of Public Health.
People living with HIV can live long and healthy lives if they are following their treatment and recommendations from their physician. They can have a family, a booming social life, and a successful career… they can lead healthy sexual lives with condom use to prevent transmission of HIV or contraction of other sexually transmitted infections.
Now for the resources that may help: most of these are free or affordable.
Marsa Marsa Sexual Health Center provides anonymous and free testing for HIV as well as many counseling services for HIV positive individuals. For STIs, Marsa also tests for syphilis, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C for affordable prices. For other STI screenings, you will have to go through one of their doctors.
