Beirut Port Grain Silos Collapse

The Beirut port’s iconic grain silos, saviors of the city on August 4 and a symbol of continued injustice at the port since then, have collapsed. Since the partial collapse of the silos’ northern block on July 31st, experts have been warning that the remaining blocks could collapse at any moment.

The silos, that were constructed in 1970, have been plagued by fires during the last few weeks.

Najib Mikati’s cabinet had approved a decision to demolish the silos earlier this year. However, the decision was ultimately blocked and the silos have instead been left to slowly collapse.

Fifty two years since they were built, and two years since the August 4 explosion, the collapse of the silos leaves a bitter taste in the mouths of everyone in the country.

With justice for the explosion’s victims yet to be achieved, the dust clouds coming out of the silos’ collapse are a timely reminder of the cloud of injustice hanging over the city. We hope you’re safe and urge everyone to follow health guidelines until the collapse’s aftermath clears.
