Amid blatant inaction in Lebanon, activists and families of victims are turning to international courts for justice for the August 4 explosion.
The Swiss foundation
Accountability Now, along with a group of victims of the Beirut port blast, filed a $250 million lawsuit in Texas against the US-Norweigan geophysical services group TGS ASA.
TGS is the company that owns Spectrum, a services company that chartered the Moldavian vessel Rhosus which had 2,750 tonnes of military-grade ammonium nitrate on board. That same material would combust eight years later, decimating Beirut and killing
more than 220 people.
The lawsuit is a claim for relief for strict liability, and seeks to recover damages for “the extraordinary loss of human life and property resulting from the blast”.
Meanwhile, Lebanese courts have been incapable of making any movement on the case, in a system that has long been plagued by political involvement and corruption.
