Afaf, Just Because – The Cake Lounge

Forget every stereotype you’ve heard about cake lounges and cafes because Afaf…Just Because is unlike any place you’ve ever been.

Upon entering this hidden gem that is tucked away on Gemmayze Street (just follow Google Maps), the hand-painted walls and kitschy features will set the tone. Larger-than-life portraits hover on the walls with the lounge’s namesake, Afaf, happily watching over the let-them-eat-cake tribute to her legacy.

Somehow both well lit and cozy at the same time, the recessed stripped down walls are adorned with mirrors and lined with comfortable seats covered with throw pillows all of which surround a majestic bar where a heavenly selection of fresh bakes sit prepared by the tattooed chef herself, Afaf’s granddaughter Farah.

It is from the open kitchen right inside the shop that Farah produces some of the highest quality and most mouthwatering cakes, desserts, pies, and cookies that Lebanon has ever seen.

Making whatever piques her interest that day, Farah keeps it fresh with date cake, brownies, chocolate cake, carrot cake, cheesecake, pistachio pound cake, and so many others — each recipe executed to perfection. The perfectly round cookies are packed with so much flavor that they’ll keep you coming back for more. The all-natural ice cream will tantalize your tastebuds. The thick generous slices of cake – well, we’ll let those speak for themselves.

The cake lounge also serves coffees, an exceptional selection of tea (we recommend the honey, ginger, lemon infusion), and even drinks!

It is the perfect place to drop by for a slice (or three) of cake, to grab a sandwich, or to toast a glass of champagne at a magical hidden gem in Beirut.
