After a sold-out show at BGC On the Roof in the summer, the Beirut Groove Collective and KED bring back HABIBI FUNK aka Jannis Jakarta Stürtz, for a return appearance on Friday 30 November. The renowned German DJ, compiler and digger behind the Habibi Funk record label and Jakarta Records, will join the BGC DJ crew for an Arabic Funk and Groove Special dancing party in our new space at KED Indoors!
Habibi Funk will be spinning obscure records from his far-ranging collection covering the funky and diverse period of the Arab world in the 60s, 70s and 80s from Sudanese jazz-funk and Tunisian disco bands to Arabic Zouk, Algerian coladera and Lebanese groove. He’ll be joined by the BGC familia Ernesto Chahoud, Natalie Shooter and Jackson Allers and their soul-fuelled sets in Arabic funk, ’60s Garage, Armenian Org Stompers, Lebanese Groovers, 1970s Ethio, Mad Punkers and Soul.
About Habibi Funk
Berlin-based DJ, compiler and digger Habibi Funk is dedicated to unearthing and sharing the funky music of the Arab world. He’s travelled across the Middle East and North Africa digging for unknown and often unreleased titles by pioneering musicians and bands who fused local and regional influences with musical interests that came from outside of the region in the 70s and 80s. Through the Habibi Funk label he’s put out a series of killer mixes and re-releases of his rare finds from the Arab world that have been re-introducing music heads to the little-known sounds of the Middle East and North Africa’s vibrant musical past. The label’s releases have been written about everywhere from the Guardian, the Independent to MOJO Magazine, Wax Poetics and Pitchfork.
