Macklemore Samples Fairuz In New Song About Gaza

Independent artist Macklemore has recently released a new pro-Palestine anthem titled “Hind’s Hall.” In this song, he samples the famous melody and instrumental from Fairuz’s track “Ana La Habibi” to convey his message about Gaza.

Six-year-old Hind Ragab and her family were evacuating their home in a neighborhood in Gaza City when their car came under fire by Israeli military, killing the family and leaving Hind alone in the backseat of the car. Left alone with a cellphone, she called the paramedics and begged them to rescue her.

When the Palestinian civil defense crew were finally able to reach the scene twelve days later, they found Hind’s body riddled with multiple bullet wounds, and the ambulance, carrying paramedics who were dispatched to rescue her, charred. Her story sparked outrage, so much that students at Columbia University renamed Hamilton Hall to Hind Hall.

Macklemore, who has been vocal about his support for Palestine, wrote the song inspired by the protests that have been taking place. He also criticized Biden in his lyrics, saying “The blood is on your hands, Biden, we can see it all / And fuck no, I’m not votin’ for you in the fall“. Macklemore’s decision to sample Fairuz for this particular song also corroborates his support for the cause and the region’s heritage.
