Just yesterday, the American University of Beirut
announced officially pricing its dollar rate at 3,900 LL for tuition fees, in accordance with Banque du Liban’s electronic exchange platform rate.
As expected, the Lebanese American University (LAU) followed suit this morning and adjusted the rates to match the 3,900 LL “semi-official” rate as well.
The announcement was sent to students citing that LAU “will keep the dollar basis of its tuition fees unchanged, but will very regrettably have to adjust the amount it charges in LBP. Students will need to opt to settle their fees either in dollars or in Lebanese pounds. Those who go for the latter option should expect to pay an amount in LBP that is a closer indicator of the real costs and value of the education”.
That’s a very elaborate way of saying,
either pay in fresh dollars or settle your tuition at the 3,900 rate.
After news of AUB’s tuition hike broke yesterday, students protested the decision on Bliss Street. Many students will sadly no longer be able to continue their education.
In this rapidly crumbling economy, we have yet to hear of a single plan or measure to be taken by our government or the powers that be. It seems as though starving us to death is their ultimate goal.
