Another 90 Migrant Workers Repatriated After Suffering Exploitation And Abuse Under Kafala

Some good news on this rainy Thursday morning.

Another 90 domestic migrant workers have landed home in Ethiopia this morning after leaving Lebanon. The women had various reasons for leaving, some including abuse, abandonment in front of the embassy, and other horrifying incidents that took place under the kafala system.

Travel expenses were covered by Egna Legna Besidet, a Lebanon-based Ethiopian migrants’ rights organization, and the International Organization for Migration.

This was made possible with the help of many heroes who donated to the fundraiser launched by Egna Legna Besidet to provide victims of the kafala system with food, medicine, and other basic necessities. Back in September, 94 Ethiopian women were also taken back home after enduring similar ordeals.

Unfortunately, thousands of domestic workers have been denied the right to freedom of association, leaving them vulnerable to abuse and exploitation.

These women deserve the best, and they have all our support.
