Here Are The Steps You Should Take To Save A Kitten You’ve Found On The Street

Spring is coming to an end, but kitten season has just begun. Thanks to Animals Lebanon, we know the steps you need to take if you’ve found a helpless kitten on the street and want to give it a chance at life.

You can contact Animals Lebanon or BETA once you’ve found a helpless kitten, but due to their extremely high boarding occupancy of kittens at the moment, they will likely be unable to take the kitten in. They will, however, be more than happy to start the process of finding the kitten a home should you be unable to – so once you’ve got the kitten and they’re photo ready, you should take a picture and send it to them so that they can spread the word.

Step one: leave it be and observe

When you find a lone kitten on the street, it may or may not have been abandoned by its mother. A mother cat will often leave her kittens in a specific area as she goes off for a few hours to find food. It is important that you observe the kitten over that time to determine whether or not it has been abandoned. If you interfere and handle a kitten that has not been abandoned, then when the mother cat comes back she will reject it and then abandon the kitten.

So, your only option in this circumstance is to observe the kitten for a few hours to be sure that it is in fact in need of help.

Step two: if the kitten’s mother is nowhere to be found, remove it from the street

What you’ll need: a carrier or container that has holes in it so that the kitten won’t suffocate, a towel or a blanket, kitty milk from any nearby vet.

Handle the kitten gently and place it in the container. Wrap the container with a blanket or a towel without covering the ventilation and prepare to take it home.

Step three: prepare to bottle-feed the kitten

If the kitten is less than a month old it will need to be bottle fed. You can get kitty milk from any nearby vet. If it is late at night and you can’t find a vet that’s open, you can go to a pharmacy and get lactose-free milk. You should never feed a kitten cow’s milk as their stomachs cannot handle it.

Step four: Continue to follow the feeding instructions on the kitty milk label.

Note that if the kitten is crying, it is probably hungry, and if it is not, then it is probably content.

Step five: Make sure that the kitten is warm at all times

The easiest way to tell if a kitten is cold is by checking the temperature of their feet and ears. If the kitten is cold you should not feed it until you have slowly comforted it and warmed its body temperature up by cradling it with a towel, blanket, or a hot water bottle (wrapped up so as not to burn the kitten). The kitten should always be warm, especially when being fed.

Step six: Take the kitten to the vet

The day after saving a kitten from the street you should take it to the vet for a checkup.

Step seven: If you are unable to keep the kitten, take photographs of it and send them to Animals Lebanon

They will circulate the photos on their social media platforms and help you look for a foster home or forever home for the kitten you’ve saved.
