Near Surface to Open for RHCP? No

The past 24 hours have been quite hilarious. Here’s how it went down:

Tuesday, 5:00 p.m.: Mashrou’ Leila declares that they will no longer open for the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s at their concert on Thursday.

Tuesday, 9:00 p.m.: A page appears on Facebook urging people to vote, tweet, and I quote: “Flood RHCP’s Facebook and Twitter accounts” in order for Lebanese alternative outfit Near Surface to open for RHCP this Thursday.

The phrase, “The body is not even cold yet people“ has been thrown around once or twice since. However, I digress.

A quick chat with Elie Zaraka, lead guitarist of the band, explains the whole situation:

“On Tuesday, we received Facebook invitations to the event ‘Near Surface to open for Red Hot Chili Peppers,’ the same way most of you did. It was not an event we created. With good intention, fans and friends started it. Soon after knowing about it, we wrote on our Facebook page what we think about the whole opening act issue.”

Today, it’s 1:00 p.m., and Beirut Scenesters are still taking this FB event seriously, with angry posts being thrown around, which to be honest is SO last Monday. The only way Near Surface will be present at the RHCP concert is by standing in the pit with everyone else at the concert.

Beirut, sigh.
