The Adorable Love Story Behind the Iconic Furn Koko

We all know the iconic Furn Koko, a 60-year-old Baskinta staple run by Krikor Aravian. Krikor, a man in his eighties, has been kneading dough and baking delectable manakish for locals and visitors for many years.

Tucked away in the scenic mountain village of Baskinta, Furn Koko is more than just a bakery—it’s a landmark of tradition and nostalgia. That’s what makes it so popular and a go-to for many! But did you know the beautiful love story has sustained this furn for 60 years?

Laure Aravian has been kneading dough and firing the oven alongside Krikor for years. Their love was described by journalist Christine Habib “as old as the manouche and as fiery as its flame”.

In the interview, Laure says that their love is as old as the stones of their beloved furn.

Their story began when they were teenagers. She loved bread, and obviously, the one who made it. She started visiting his bakery every day.

Laure had many suitors, but she rejected them all because she wanted to marry for love. During that time, Krikor was their neighbor, and he helped Laure and her sister with their school assignments.

In March of 1966, as Laure was leaving school, Krikor approached her and asked her to elope with him. He said: “We should elope! Either you’ll come with me, or go back to your family, and that’s it.”

She didn’t think twice. “Without a suitcase of clothes or any of my personal belongings, I eloped with Krikor.” And from that moment, her life changed.

And today, after 60 years, this beautiful love story has blossomed into a thriving business. People from all over Lebanon visit the furn and meet its charming couple to hear their sweet story and savor their delicious food.

The bakery is renowned for its flavorful manakish, featuring mouthwatering toppings—from mozzarella with green thyme to qawarma with eggs and cheese, figs with walnuts, and many other combinations.

Furn Krikor has become a piece of Baskinta’s heritage! Don’t forget to visit during your next roadtrip, and make sure to follow them on Instagram.
