The world has lost the man behind one of the most beloved chocolate spreads of all time. Francesco Rivella, the man largely credited as the “inventor” of Nutella, passed away on February 14th at the age of 97.
Rivella, who spent his career at Ferrero—the company behind Nutella, Kinder, and Ferrero Rocher—helped perfect the iconic chocolate-hazelnut spread we all know and love. Before launching Nutella, he worked under Michele Ferrero, son of Ferrero founder Pietro Ferrero, studying ingredients and flavors to craft new products. His efforts led to the creation of Giandujot, the first version of Nutella, in 1946. After a long career, Rivella retired to focus on fruit farming and the traditional Italian sport of pallapugno.
