Non-profit feminist organization KAFA (Enough) is facing criticism for their recent awareness campaign on domestic violence in Lebanon. The campaign featured a number of evacuation warnings, similar to those released by enemy forces during the war, urging women to “evacuate violent spaces”.
The campaign’s use of evacuation warnings has been widely criticized for being tone-deaf and deeply insensitive.
KAFA has since removed the post from all their social media platform and issued a statement addressing the backlash:
This poorly thought-out approach is yet another example of how provocative tactics fail to effectively raise awareness around serious issues. Though this does not undermine the severity of gender-based violence and the rise of femicide cases in Lebanon, the campaign’s execution risks overshadowing the critical conversation surrounding these urgent issues.
Here are some of the reactions to their campaign from X (formerly known as Twitter):
Though we understand that for many women, escaping violent spaces is indeed a life-or-death situation, the campaign’s approach remains problematic. It detracts from the real-life struggles faced by survivors and the need for more nuanced, sensitive messaging.
