During today’s parliamentary session and after two years of presidential vacuum, the head of the Lebanese Army Joseph Aoun was elected as Lebanon’s 14th president. Here are some things you need to know about our new president:
Early Life
Joseph Aoun was born on January 10, 1964, in Sin El-Fil to Hoda Ibrahim Makhlouta and Khalil Aoun. Aoun completed secondary school at the Collège des Frères Mont La Salle. His family is originally from the town of Al-Aaishiyah in South Lebanon.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and International Affairs from the Lebanese American University in 2007 and a bachelor’s degree in Military Science from the Lebanese Army Military Academy.
Military Career
Aoun began his military career as a cadet officer at the Military Academy on May 19, 1983. He steadily advanced through the ranks until he became Brigadier General in 2013. On March 8, 2017, he was promoted to General and appointed the 14th Commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces.
During his military career, Aoun received several medals, including the Knight and Officer of the National Order of the Cedar, which is the highest state order of Lebanon.
We hope this marks the start of a more stable and productive phase for Lebanon, following the two-year presidential vacuum.
