According to the National News Agency (NNA), the historic Qubbat Duris, a monument located south of the Baalbek ruins, has sustained significant damage following the relentless enemy airstrikes on the region.
The 13th century monument is supported by eight columns made of red granite, and it is said that its stones were sourced from the remnants of the ancient Baalbek citadel. However, part of the structure has collapsed. Multiple nearby structures, including Al-Mortada Hospital, were also damaged.
The municipalities of Baalbek and Duris, alongside local volunteers, began clearing the area. Civil Defense teams worked throughout the night, extinguishing fires to facilitate the reopening of the roads.
Meanwhile, Baalbek Governor Bachir Khodr dispelled rumors surrounding the iconic Baalbek ruins. He confirmed that none of its columns are leaning or have collapsed.
Apart from these historic monuments in Baalbek, recent airstrikes have been targeting significant cultural and historical sites around Lebanon. The recent attacks on Nabatieh led to the destruction of its centuries-old souk. This deliberate destruction raises serious concerns about the erasure of Lebanese heritage.
