Every Lebanese person’s biggest nightmare just might be having to deal with money transfers. We’re sure you’ve heard about the Lebanese fintech start-up Purpl at least once since its launch in 2021, so let’s talk about whether this new digital wallet app is actually making money transfers easier.
Ever since the financial crisis, this has become an issue gnawing at most of us. Sending and/or receiving money often means remittances are going to be short a few dollars, since most money transfer services charge hefty fees for the transaction. For families that rely on money received from relatives abroad, this isn’t ideal. A transfer fee AND a cash out fee are not sustainable when every dollar counts.
We downloaded the app and it’s actually pretty straightforward. Simple design, not overwhelming, and the directions are clear. You’re first asked to create an account and write your name the same way it’s written on your ID or passport. You enter your phone number and email, so you’ll receive an OTP via SMS and then verify your account by email. That’s it…you’re in.
Technically, you still need to verify it’s actually you. All you need to do is scan a government-issued document and take a selfie to verify that your face matches. A few extra steps are totally fine if this means extra security!
Whether you’re a freelancer who is receiving payments from foreign clients or you’re expecting some cash from one of your relatives abroad, the sender can send the money through Paysend or Remitly. And guess what? Expats can also benefit from the affordable service to send money to themselves when they’re visiting Lebanon.
Sending money to Lebanon on Purpl currently works from 46+ countries. All the sender has to do is download either Paysend or Remitly, link their bank account or card to the platform, enter the amount, beneficiary details, and send via Purpl.
The great thing is that Purpl is actually TWICE as cheap for senders as other money transfer services. And receivers can cash out with zero fees from 100+ ATMs of Banque Libano Française in Lebanon – without even needing a card or bank account. The app also helps you locate the ATM closest to you!
We think Purpl is a great step towards financial accessibility, especially for those who rely on remittances from relatives abroad or even freelancers who have clients that aren’t based in Lebanon. It’s the cheapest option for senders, has zero cash out fees for receivers, and it offers instant transfers.
They also have many new services and features coming soon!
