Former Mashrou’ Leila Member Wins Prestigious BAFTA Award

Lebanese composer, director, and former Mashrou’ Leila member Firas Abou Fakher just won a BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) award for his score on BBC documentary “The Shamima Begum Story”.

The documentary tells the story of Shamima Begum, a British-born woman who left the UK at 15 to join ISIS. Desperate to go back home four years later, Begum was stripped of her UK citizenship and is now stateless, living in a detention camp in Syria.

Following his win, Abou Fakher took to Instagram to write: “…as we celebrate this win, she still sits in a camp in Syria, unable to go home to the UK. Her story is more important now than ever.”

He also thanked his team for trusting him to put music in a project that took eight long years to complete. This prestigious award highlights Abou Fakher’s talent in constructing a substantial body of music for the documentary.

Congratulations!
