Beirut’s cultural landmark that was beloved many independent movie lovers, cinephiles, and creatives, Metropolis Cinema is coming back after four years of closure. But this time, with the construction of their own cinema!
In 2008, the Metropolis Association relocated to the Sofil Center, where they became known for screening blockbuster movies and hosting spectacular film festivals. They also cultivated exciting programs for cinephiles and championed local, Arab, and international creative talents within the industry.
However, like many other projects and organizations, Metropolis Cinema suffered greatly during the economic crisis of 2019. Following the closure of Empire Cinema in the Sofil Center, the association was unable to sustain its activities and had to cease operations, marking the temporary end of a magnificent era for Lebanese cinema.
Luckily, the association will be opening its own theaters and cinematheque this summer in Mar Mikhael, thanks to the generous donation of a plot of land by Unifoncière S.A.L.
In case you missed it, actor and director Kassem Istanbouli recently announced the renovation of “Le Colinsée Cinema” in Hamra. We’re eager to see what the future holds for Lebanese theater and cinema!
