Lebanese judge Nawaf Salam was elected head of the International Court of Justice on Tuesday after serving as a member since February 2018. He has been a jurist among seventeen judges at the ICJ who were tasked with issuing an order following the genocide reports that South Africa filed against Israel in late December.
Salam dedicated his early career to working as a scholar and lecturer at multiple institutions, including the American University of Beirut, Sorbonne University, and Harvard University. Salam later focused on public interest and proceeded to take on roles within the United Nations, acting as an Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Lebanon from 2007 until 2017. Salam’s name was also heavily circulated in the running for president back in 2021, but ultimately, it did not come to fruition.
He also was the vice-president of the 67th session of the UN General Assembly from September 2012 until September 2013, before he then acted as its president in July 2013. He had also been considered multiple times to become a Prime Minister for Lebanon back in 2019.
With an impressive diplomatic background, Nawaf Salam continues to represent Lebanon with distinction in the international sphere.
