Global Positioning Specialists (GPS) recently released a list of the most dangerous countries to be a driver in, with Lebanon ranking at the top.
In addition to being a country where road safety regulations are mere suggestions, Lebanon is home to ill-maintained roads riddled with potholes, pitch black highway tunnels, and malfunctioning traffic lights.
GPS considered the following criteria: road quality, number of deaths, and motor vehicle crime statistics in 60 of the most car-dependent countries around the world.
First off, people rightfully commented on the validity of these rankings:
Others seemed to agree/make light of the ranking:
On a more serious note, sources have reported that there is a noticeable increase in the rate of traffic accidents per day, as it reached 1,507 by August 2023 after having been 1,482 in August of the previous year.
Will the survey conducted by GPS be taken into consideration by the Lebanese government? Definitely not – but at least we’re number one at something. A win is a win.
