Every Studio Ghibli fan was excited to hear that Hayao Miyazaki, the studio’s co-founder, was releasing another brilliant film – even after he said he’d retire like a hundred times in the past. In fact, he was supposed to retire after releasing The Wind Rises back in 2013, but he decided to come back for his 12th feature film The Boy and the Heron, alongside a few other projects.
Apparently, the movie’s box office debut (which amassed $13.2 million in its opening weekend) surpassed that of Howl’s Moving Castle ($10.3 million) when it was released in 2004, and if you’ve watched that movie, you know it’s arguably one of the best Ghibli films…ever (or maybe I’m just biased, because who isn’t obsessed with Howl Pendragon?).
This Ghibli feature film is actually a semi-autobiographical fantasy, and it follows a young boy named Mahito who ventures into a world shared by the living and the dead, tackling some of the themes that Miyazaki is most famous for, including life, death, creation, and friendship while pushing the limits of imagination. I don’t want to give too much away.
The movie was released in Japan on July 14th, 2023 and became available worldwide by December 8. It was released in Lebanon on December 14, so we thought we’d point you to the cinemas that are showing The Boy and the Heron so you can dive into this highly anticipated Ghibli experience.
