This again? Alright. Lebanese TV ads have had a history of being pretty sexist, and you’d think that in 2023, some brands would be more careful about their marketing strategy now with ‘woke’ culture. Not that society isn’t sexist anymore, but maybe DON’T actively endorse sexist stereotypes when you’re marketing a product that has nothing to do with the premise of your ad?
Well, Buzz Vodka Mix has had a history of unfunny and sexist adverts, so this isn’t their first rodeo (we even wrote about it back in 2016). Who knew that the ONLY way to advertise a mediocre alcoholic drink was by making jokes about women?
Looking back as far as 2012, the creative team at Buzz really love the chill boyfriend vs. emotionally charged girlfriend trope, so much that they stuck with it…for over 10 years.
Basically, their newest ad is about a guy who describes a woman as “mesh helwe, sexy” in front of his girlfriend, which ultimately kills the mood. Then, he proceeds to dig a deeper hole by saying that women can either be sexy, pretty, or attractive. Don’t we just love when men go around comparing women and categorizing them based solely on their looks?
Obviously, his girlfriend and her friends don’t take this lightly. They’re mad. Him and his bros are fighting for his life. The stakes are high. Oh, what ever will he do?!
Unfortunately, the ad doesn’t end there. His solution? He tells his girlfriend that she’s all three, cracks open a Buzz drink, and un-kills the mood. Someone give this guy an award for being the BEST BOYFRIEND EVER.
And this is in almost ever ad. Like this one:
And this one:
Boyfriend does something. Girlfriend is pissed off. He solves it with Buzz. Because that’s EXACTLY what women want from men. For them to be total assholes then just gloss over it with their limited problem solving skills (aka being even more misogynistic and giving her a drink!!!).
Is this the equivalent of the Kendall Jenner Pepsi commercial? Might as well be.
Anywayyyy, if Buzz is really having that much trouble coming up with ideas for ads that aren’t reinforcing gender stereotypes, our inbox is open!
