Lebanese-Palestinian designer Kinda Afifi is weaving Palestinian heritage into fabric with her Lebanon-based brand while empowering Palestinian women in the process.
Highlighting the craftsmanship of embroidery, Afifi’s brand not only keeps creative traditions alive but also advocates for the Palestinian cause through her stylish and luxurious collections. Her designs are brought to life by the efforts of Palestinian women from the Ain Al Hilweh refugee camp in Lebanon.
Afifi says, “the women living in the camp are very driven and very talented, but they don’t get equal opportunities. I wanted to shed light on their craft and the work they’re doing and to help them make a living.”
Embroidery holds significant importance in Palestinian cultural and artistic heritage, as the traditional thobe features remarkable embroidery patterns that convey a visual language of cultural, regional, and familial history.
And so Palestinian heritage is hand-sewn into every piece, quite literally—even the hats!
Her collection “It’s Called Palestine” features designs showcasing her ancestral roots, including the keys to her grandparents’ home in Palestine. Each design is named after popular slogans of Palestinian resilience, resistance, and return, including “We Will Return”, “From the River to the Sea”, and “Love to the Land”.
In light of the recent violence unfolding in Palestine, the proceeds made from her latest line will go to helping the people of Gaza. Want to support this Lebanon-based brand for Palestine? Make sure to check out all the collections on their website.
