What Comes After Gen Z?

The short answer is: Generation Alpha. After boomers, millennials, and Gen Z, this is what we can expect from Generation Alpha.

What do we know about this generation?

  • Named after the first letter of the Greek alphabet, Generation Alpha will be the first generation to be born entirely in the 21st century.
  • They will largely be the children of millennials.
  • The oldest members of Generation Alpha would be born between 2010 and 2012, depending on where you consider the cut-off for Gen Z to be.
  • Generation Alpha will spend “years in living arrangements that do not include both of their biological parents…[at rates] higher than any generation observed in the previous century,” according to Elwood Carlson, a demographer and professor of sociology at Florida State University.
  • “This generation of children will be shaped in households that move more frequently, change careers more often and increasingly live in urban, not just suburban, environments.” – social researcher Mark McCrindle, who coined the name Generation Alpha.
  • McCrindle also suggests that Generation Alpha is likely to have prolonged educational journeys, delay the start of their professional careers, and, as a result, live with their parents for an extended period, (potentially into their late twenties).

Whatever they look like, there is no doubt that Generation Alpha is set to redefine societal norms and expectations, embracing a world of innovation and interconnectedness unlike any generation before them.
