A “research project” carried out by Great Green Wall, has attempted to use AI image generator Midjourney to find the “ideal” beauty standards of every country in the world. Sadly, this weird experiment also included Lebanon. Here’s how this AI image generator imagines the ideal Miss Lebanon.
According to Great Green Wall, the ideal “‘Miss Lebanon’ features a brunette woman with curly hair and an olive complexion. The women each have a slender figure and small waist, with broad shoulders. In terms of facial features, the women have a sharp jawline, thin nose, and small forehead – with dark eyebrows and thin lips.”
Is it just us or is the bottom left picture literally just a picture of 2015 Miss Lebanon winner Valerie Abou Chacra? And the rest look like an amalgam of all the other previous Miss Lebanon winners. We have no idea what those green and red flags and emblems are. They’re all very much not how any Lebanese woman would dress or even look in the current day, but we won’t let that get in the way of some good old Orientalism.
Here’s how some other countries (Egypt and the US), fared under the AI’s spotlight:
Obviously, all the Egyptians are just a modernized Cleaopatra, and live in gold tombs in their biknis, because why not? And the Americans are stuck in a weird and immensely white past. Truly a great use of resources and time.
The study concludes by saying that “through this research, we have been able to determine that Artificial Intelligence is rapidly developing and becoming more aware of the world around it, including ideal beauty standards for women and how different countries vary in their expectations for womens’ appearance.”
We don’t think that’s true.
