Lebanese politician and former Speaker of Parliament Hussein el-Husseini passed away this morning at the age of 85.
El-Husseini was a major player in the forging of the Taif Agreement, the accord that led to the formal end of Lebanon’s civil war in 1990. Born on 15 April 1937, he was speaker of parliament from 1984 to 1992, succeeding Kamel al Assaad and preceding Nabih Berri’s present reign.

The Zahle-born politician was first elected to parliament in 1972 and was a close collaborator with Amal leader, Imam Moussa al Sadr. El-Husseini then played a major part in the founding of the Amal Movement alongside Sadr and served in a major leadership roles in the party prior to his ascension to speaker.
