Zeina Kanjo’s Husband Arrested In Sweden

Nearly two years after the chilling murder of Zeina Kanjo, her husband Ibrahim Ghazal was arrested in Sweden following an arrest warrant that was issued by Interpol, reports The Lawyard.

In early 2021, Kanjo was found dead in her marital home in Ain Mreisseh, days after filing a domestic violence case against her husband. A forensic doctor later determined that the cause of death was strangulation, and Ghazal was charged with murder by Beirut’s Attorney General Judge Ziad Abou Haidar. By then, he had already fled to Istanbul and a Red Notice alert was later requested by public prosecutor Ghassan Oueidat.

Following the murder, Ghazal proceeded to post disturbing photos of him and Kanjo together, claiming that he “missed her”. Ghazal had been on the run since.

The shocking rise in domestic violence cases against women in Lebanon has been met with little consideration by authorities, as the discriminatory laws and religious courts continue to fall short in protecting women from these atrocious acts of violence. A study by ABAAD, an NGO dedicated to achieving gender equality in the MENA region, indicated that 96% of cases of violence against women go unreported in Lebanon.

Our hearts go out to Zeina Kanjo’s family and loved ones. We will be updating any progress made in her murder case.
