“August 4, 2020: a crime and tragedy the size of a country.” On the surreal second anniversary of the Beirut Port explosion, citizens and families of victims will be marching to demand justice yet again, in light of an investigation being put completely on hold. The protest is set to start at 3:00 PM at the Palace of Justice, and will continue to to the Statue of Emigrant.
Ahead of the blast anniversary, the government has been promoting the demolition of the silos, the most stark visual reminder of the blast and their negligence. Families and victims, on the other hand, have been calling for the preservation of the silos so that their colossal losses do not get forgotten. The
recent collapse of a portion of the silos was a cruel reminder of the devastating blast, only days prior to its 2-year anniversary.
To this day, August 4 remains a testimony to the corruption of the political class.
