Autism Acceptance Month: 12 Things To Know About Autism

Note: The autism community previously called on media to shift from using “awareness” to “acceptance” this April to foster change and inclusivity as opposed to passive awareness. We are abiding by this shift.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) refers to a very wide variety of neurological and developmental conditions. These can range from trouble with social interactions to sensory aversions, manifesting differently in each individual.

Here are 12 things to know!

1. People with autism have feelings and emotions

People with autism have the full range of human emotions! They may have a condition known as alexithymia, which hinders their ability to understand and process their emotions.

2. One Two Three Autism School is Lebanon’s first specialized private school of its kind!

1,2,3 Autism School provides students with therapeutic intervention and specialized attention that allows them to thrive, along with Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) therapy tailored to maximize their success. It also serves as a wonderful support system for families!

3. The Lebanese Autism Society has been around for 23 years.

This incredible NGO advocates for the rights of individuals with autism in Lebanon. It is headed by Mrs. Arwa El Amine Halawi, a mother of a child with autism who saw a great absence in support and services for families.

4. There is no direct cause for autism.

As it stands, no research has established a clear and reliable cause for autism.

5. People with autism are not scary or difficult.

Much like anyone else, they are simply different!

6. The needs and abilities of people with autism can evolve greatly over time.

7. This is a human rights issue.

People with autism are often subject to stigma and discrimination, it is important to remember that the availability of accessible services and treatments is crucial to their right to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standards of physical and mental health.

8. Individuals with autism spectrum disorder may be very creative.

With many finding a passion and talent for music, theater, art, and dance.

9. Children with autism can attend mainstream schools.

While specialized schools and tailored programs may be beneficial or vital to some, many people with autism can perform well in a traditional school by simply having specialists, aides, training or resources on hand.

10. People with autism usually have repetitive behavioral patterns.

Veering away from this pattern may result in anxiety and discomfort for the individual. This is particularly important for teachers to keep in mind as they work with children with autism.

11. On average, 1 in 100 children has ASD.

According to the World Health Organization.

12. Increasing governmental commitments is a must.

Private institutions and NGOs cannot bear the brunt of providing services for people with autism. Governments must be instrumental in making sure services are inclusive of all populations.
