Elgorithm: Taking Care Of School Students’ Mental Health

According to multiple studies gathered by the Beirut-based non-profit organization Elgorithm, 90% of youth residing in Lebanon expressed that they have been struggling with their mental health while only 6% of them have access to professional support. This situation is fueled by COVID-19 repercussions, high unemployment rates which impact families, as well as electricity, medicine, and food shortages. All this is only worsened by the absence of awareness and suicide prevention methods embedded within local public schools.

Answering the urgent call for remedies, Elgorithm has created a digital platform through which students and teachers at public schools in Lebanon will have free access to mental health programs alongside a directory to protection services available across the country. The easily accessible database will guarantee that youth are directly shielded from sexual violence, domestic abuse, and substance use – an unhealthy method many students are using to cope with their current state of hopelessness.

Basic education, cash, food, and shelter assistance will also be provided to prevent students from dropping out of their academic institutions.

“Elgorithm for Schools” platform is part of a policy proposal that the organization is working on passing to the Ministry of Education, to ensure that mental health care becomes integrated into the national educational system.

The proposal includes a detailed implementation strategy that will offer 350,000 students a sustainable and equal access to protection and care services.
