Beirut Blast Families And Survivors Appeal To UN Human Rights Council
In yet another cry for justice, the families of the Beirut explosion victims as well as many survivors have made an appeal to the UN Human Rights Council, asking for “an international, independent, and impartial investigative mission”.
In a joint letter sent by 145 Lebanese and international rights groups, survivors, and families of the victims, they highlighted the ongoing issues with the deadlocked investigations stating that, “the government of Lebanon initiated an investigation into the Beirut blast, but the ensuing domestic investigation has been repeatedly obstructed and has failed in meeting the benchmarks”.
This comes as the domestic investigation has been met with multiple political hurdles, going so far as members of parliament, security officials, and ministers using their supposed immunities as a defense against appearing in front of Judge Tarek Bitar.
The letter ends by saying, “the thousands of individuals who have had their lives upended and the hundreds of thousands of individuals who have seen their capital city disfigured in a most irrevocable way deserve nothing less”.
The August 4 explosion killed at least 218 people and destroyed our city. We have yet to see anyone be held accountable for this crime against humanity.
