Lebanon’s First Electric Car Receives Mixed Reactions

Amidst a rapidly worsening economic and political crisis, a private company named EV Electra has launched Lebanon’s first ever electric sports car.

Built in Lebanon from start to finish, the automobile is named the “Quds Rise”, as it was created by Lebanon-born Palestinian businessman Jihad Mohammad. It is a red sports car with butterfly doors and a big golden insignia on the bumper. Lebanese and Palestinian engineers work within a team of 300 people, and they hope to produce upwards of 10,000 vehicles over the coming year.

Since this comes during a time when car sales are at their lowest, the manufacturer revealed that the $30,000 car can be purchased with half the payments in fresh dollars and half Lebanese Lira (at an unspecified rate).

Environmentally, this guides Lebanon in the right direction, but with constant electrical problems, it may be difficult for investors to push.

While many lauded the reveal as momentous, since more than half the Lebanese population plunged into poverty over the past two years, the project received quite a bit of backlash. Many people took to Twitter to express their opinions regarding the matter:
