This Initiative Is Ending ‘Period Poverty’ In Lebanon With Free Sanitary Products

Some may think of periods as nothing more than a monthly nuisance, but for many women, periods are “that time of the month” during which they cannot afford to buy necessary menstrual supplies. As such, many deprived areas have witnessed recurrent incidents of women being forced to use toilet paper, newspapers, and rags as ways to manage their periods.

Luckily, a wonderful group of advocates has recently emerged in Lebanon to help women get access to appropriate menstrual products and hopefully end period poverty.

Dawrati is a local initiative set up by three women, dedicated to providing sanitary pads and other menstrual products to women who need them. They also work on changing the world’s view on menstrual cycles and breaking down the social stigma of openly talking about periods.

Although ending period poverty would ultimately require political action, these heroes have offered the means to expedite change ourselves. All you have to do is donate any menstrual supplies you can offer (pads, panty liners, pain killers, intimate wet wipes, or intimate gel soap) and drop them off at the nearest delivery points listed in their Instagram post below.

The lack of access to sanitary products due to financial restrictions is, unfortunately, worryingly common in Lebanon. So donate and let us fight period poverty.

No woman should have to choose between feeding herself and buying sanitary products.
