Lebanese artist
Adra Kandil is integrating her colourful dreams into images of old Beirut in a bid to prove their timelessness, and revive our feelings of nostalgia.
An exceptionally talented artist, Kandil brings to the table her own twist on digital art:
Reminding people of the Beirut we know and love is key for Kandil who uses a mix of colorful and black and white imagery to express the stark dissonance between what has passed and what is now. With many takes on historical photographs, she reveals her love for Lebanese identity and culture.
She writes:
Beirut is listening to Fairouz with the smell of coffee in the morning. Beirut is walking around Hamra in the summer heat. Beirut is old men playing backgammon in the corniche while they watch the fishermen. Beirut is getting lost in mar mar mikhael and finding yourself in Gemmayzeh. It’s romantic, nostalgic, loud. It’s home. Don’t stop talking about Beirut. Don’t stop thinking about Beirut. Adra wants us to keep talking about Beirut. Her art aims to reignite emotions that will push people towards change, a reminder that justice is still a far away dream for the people of Lebanon.
