For The First Time In 39 Years, Lebanese Film Nominated In Berlin Festival
After decades of absence, Dafater Maya (Memory Box in English) lands Lebanese creators a spot at the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival.
For the first time in 39 years, the Lebanese film industry regains its position in the “Golden Bear” award category in Berlin. Directors Joanna Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige were selected out of dozens of other international feature film submissions.
Memory Box tells the story of a Lebanese woman who moved from Lebanon to Canada with her mother. One day, she suddenly receives a box filled with notebooks and cassette tapes that were recorded during the 1980s and 1990s amidst Lebanon’s brutal war.
The Lebanese production company “About Productions” and the distribution company “MC” considered that the selection of this film for the award is a testament of Lebanon’s cultural role in there region.
We couldn’t go happier for both Hadjithomas and Jorgeige, and wish them the best of luck.
