AUB Votes Today: Political Parties Boycott And Seculars Set To Win

After independent candidates emerged victorious at both the Lebanese American University and the Rafic Hariri University student elections, many are hoping for a similar outcome from today’s race at the American University of Beirut.

Several clubs dominated by sectarian political parties announced their boycott of the student elections just last week, which many perceived to be them shying away from a losing race.

The clubs called on the university’s administration to halt the elections, claiming that e-voting only pressures students and “constrains their freedom of choice”. This comes after many years of landslide victories for politically affiliated students who have slowly started losing their standing to independent candidates from the Secular Club in recent years.

With the sectarian political parties withdrawing, progressive and secular students are set to claim the university’s democratic space.

What are your expectations?
