Minister of Education Issues Racist Schooling Decision

Truly saddening (but not surprising) to see that even in 2020, we are fighting for the same causes from decades ago.

In a new blow to racial equality, the Minister of Education in Lebanon’s caretaker government Tarek Majzoub has issued a racist decision excluding children whose mothers are Lebanese but whose fathers are not from enrolling in public schools. This means that those parents must wait until Lebanese children are enrolled until they assess whether or not there is capacity for their kids.

Lebanon’s racist and sexist nationality law stipulates that only children with a Lebanese father are granted citizenship, and with education being compulsory this forces parents of non-Lebanese children to enroll their kids in private schools (a much more expensive endeavor).

While he is still in office, it is vital of Majzoub to overturn this overtly racist decision and allow all children to enroll in public schools. The Human Rights Watch has already released a report condemning this decision.
