This Initiative Is Tackling ‘Period Poverty’ In Lebanon With Free Sanitary Products

Some may think of periods as nothing more than a monthly nuisance, but for many women, the period is far more complicated due to the fact that they cannot afford to buy menstrual supplies. With little money and lack of access, many women in deprived areas have seen reports of women being forced to use toilet paper, newspapers, and rags as ways to manage their periods.

Luckily, a new group of advocates has emerged to help girls and women get access to appropriate menstrual products in order to hopefully end period poverty.

Dawrati, an initiative set up by three women, dedicated to getting products in the hands of those who need them as well as changing the world’s view on menstrual cycles, as they also work on breaking down the social stigma of openly talking about periods.

Although period poverty would ultimately require political action, these heroes offered a way we can expedite change ourselves. All we have to do is donate any menstrual supply (pads, panty liners, pain killers, intimate wet wipes, or intimate gel soap) and drop them off at the nearest delivery points listed in their Instagram post below.

The umbrella term used to describe a lack of access to sanitary products due to financial restrictions is, unfortunately, worryingly common in Lebanon. So donate and let us fight period poverty.

No woman should have to choose between feeding herself and buying sanitary products.
