This Initiative Is Raising Funds For Victims Of Kafala System In Lebanon

In the past few weeks, several instances of abuse against migrant workers have surfaced in Lebanon, led by the tragic and heartbreaking story of Faustina Tay’s death.

The migrant worker’s body was found in a car park under her employers’ home in Beirut’s southern suburbs on March 14, and an investigation was launched into her employers’ alleged abuse after sparking international outrage.

Unfortunately, the manner of Faustina Tay’s death is not a one-time incident, but rather recurrent in Lebanon, as a direct result of the unjust and criminal Kafala System.

Add to that the current economic crisis and the coronavirus pandemic, and it’s clear to see that migrant workers in Lebanon are struggling, to say the least.

With no legal protection, workers who have miraculously escaped their abuse have very little to sustain themselves.

In an effort to support them, Ethiopian activist Banchi Yimer and founder of Egna Legna Besidet, a Lebanon-based Ethiopian migrants’ rights organization, has launched a fundraiser.

Donations will be used to provide these women with food, medicine, and other basic necessities.
