You haven’t tried an authentic Lebanese breakfast if you haven’t had a steaming hot bowl of foul with its usual sides of tomatoes, mint, olives, olive oil, and warm pita. We found 4 hidden gems in Beirut that’ll make you drop whatever you’re doing for breakfast this weekend and head over for one of Lebanon’s most famous dishes.
Nestled in a nearly invisible back street in Mar Elias, is Al Soussi. This tiny, yet renowned and bustling breakfast spot serves everything from foul and msabbaha to eggs and kawarma. It was voted by CNN as one of the best breakfasts in the world.
This unknown place in Zarif, near the Sanayeh Garden has the best msabbaha we’ve ever tried. While many patrons claim that the owner used to make it better before his son took the reigns, it’s still delicious and a must try. All of their menu items are the perfect level of savory, creamy, and satiating. Make sure you ask for the added spices on top of the msabbaha.
Up the street from El Riyadeh is what many people consider Beirut’s best foul. It isn’t well known among most but it’s definitely worth trying. Their foul and msabbaha are very affordable and they even offer about six different types of egg dishes for those that don’t want such a heavy breakfast. Don’t forget to ask for their freshly baked bread.
Mataam Al Hajj Issa in Tarik el Jdide has all the basic breakfast staples and then some. Be it foul, msabbaha, or hummos, you’re in for a treat and can even enjoy it in their outside seating area. If you like your foul slightly on the sour side, this option is for you.
