Everything You Need To Know About The New iPhone X
Apple introduced the new iPhone X (pronounced 10) last night, exposing its impressive new features and technological advancements.
Left: iPhone X – Middle: iPhone 8 Plus – Right: iPhone 8.
Here is what you need to know about the most futuristic iPhone yet:
Display
The new iPhone X has a huge 5.8-inch edge-to-edge “super retina display”. And with it having no home button, it covers the whole body (Except for a very small part on top for the sensors).
This is the first iPhone ever to have an enhanced OLED display. It also has “True-tone” feature – which makes your iPhone display change its temperature automatically to blend in with surrounding lighting in order to make it feel more comfortable on the eyes.
For the number-geeks: the display quality is 2436×1125 and 458 ppi
Body
iPhone X has a glass body on the front and back. It’s an enhanced version of Gorilla glass 5, so it’s the most durable glass to ever grace a smartphone. The phone has stainless steel edges.
Having a glass body gives it a glossy finish and enables wireless charging. Although the iPhone X has the biggest screen ever seen on an iPhone, it’s actually smaller than the iPhone 7 Plus, and only slightly larger than the iPhone 7 (since the screen takes advantage of the whole body real estate).
You can get your iPhone X in either silver or a space gray color.
iPhone X is also water and dust resistant (Not waterproof) – Rating: IP67
Wireless Charging
In a big effort from Apple to try to push the industry forward and make their smartphones completely wireless, the new iPhone X supports wireless charging. Not a completely wireless system, though (rumors say this technology will be available in a few years from now).
You can use the third-party Qi wireless pads, or you can wait until the new Apple AirPower charging mat becomes available in early 2018.
Apple AirPower can charge your iPhone, Apple Watch, Apple AirPods all at once.
Face ID
Since there’s no home button on the iPhone X, Apple has introduced Face ID.
You can use Face ID to unlock your phone, and to confirm purchases.
Face ID works by scanning your face in 3D so it doesn’t get bypassed by a picture on the phone like what happens in Samsung’s scanning.
Face ID won’t work if your eyes are closed, or if you’re avoiding looking at the phone (so, don’t worry you heavy sleepers, no one can use your face to unlock your phone while you’re sleeping).
Face ID works in low light conditions thanks to new innovative sensors Apple embedded in the bar on top of the iPhone X.
Face ID will also work with different face variations, so if you have makeup, different hairstyle, wearing a scarf, grew a beard, longer hair…
Since there’s no home button, Apple also introduced new screen gestures to replace what functions you had on the home button.
Camera
iPhone X has new Portrait lighting mode. It’s just like the normal popular portrait mode, but now you can control the lighting on faces like you would be able to in a studio.
Portrait mode and Portrait lighting mode is now available on the selfie camera also.
Although the megapixels didn’t change, a more important thing did. A new bigger and wider camera sensor, and an optical image stabilization on both lenses on the back makes it one of the best smartphone cameras for photo and video recording.
For the number-geeks: 12 MP dual cameras on the back and 7 MP on the front. 4K Video in 60 fps and 1080p in 240 fps.
Power and Battery Life
This one is for those who are tech savvy: the new iPhone has an A11 Fusion Neural Engine 64-bit architecture chip with 3 GB of RAM and holds 6 cores; 2 low performance cores to be used when you’re lightly-using the phone (to save battery), and 4 high performance cores to be used when heavy-using the phone.
The battery life on iPhone X lasts 2 hours more than the iPhone 7, so approximately (at least we hope) it should have an entire day battery life.
Oh yeah! There’s new animated emojis – animojis – emojis that now reflect your facial emotions!
Cost
iPhone X will come in 2 different storage sizes: 64GB and 256GB
In the US, the 64GB version is going to sell for $999, and the 256GB version for $1,149.
There are a lot more features that are packed in the iPhone X, but we wanted to only highlight the most important ones that we thought you’d care about.
Apple claims the new iPhone X is the future. And we think it is! What do you think?
